lyrics

In a small town on a quiet main street
There is a flower shop owned and operated by a florist.
In the summer he sets up displays on the sidewalk
And sits out there on a wooden beach chair.

Many locals pass by and they stop and they talk
To the florist and admire his flowers.
When it’s slow and there’s no one around he sits
And he reads a story or a book for flower-growers.

At the end of the day, he goes home alone
He’s pretty lonely, but not too much,
And when he gets home, he’s got a garden of his own
To take care of for an hour or two.

And in the evening when he’s done all his work
He sometimes has a few
But never too much, and he’s done all his work
And he usually feels pretty good.

The flowers, he loves them
They are his peace and his patience.

In the winter he sets up displays in the shop
And his customers feel good coming in
Cause it’s cold in the street and the florist has heated
The shop so the flowers can grow.

It’s dark in the winter, and Valentine’s Day
Is the second-best-selling day of the year
Next to Mothers’ Day, the other day that flowers sell best
And the florist works hardest those days.

If he had a love, imagine the bouquet
He would prepare with care.
But the florist, he has no significant other
And no mother for that matter either.

So gently he settles for arranging the petals
For lovers and mothers of others
And on long winter evenings, waters potted green things
And sits down with something to drink.

The flowers, he loves them
They are his peace and his patience.

Year in and year out, he lives day by day in this way
And he’s always ok.
For the flowers, the florist provides all that they need
For the florist, the flowers give peace.

He knows, of course, a flower is not a friend
But the flowers are like friendship for him
And he knows, of course, a flower is not a child
But the flowers, for him, are children.

He takes care of them
And they take care of him.

The flowers, he loves them
They are his peace and his patience.
